The M. Ryrie Milnor History Room

At the end of the corridor from the Duncan Wing lobby, you will find the M. Ryrie Milnor History Room, which contains memorabilia and artifacts from the Smith family and the early days of the hospital. There is a slide show depicting the numerous transformations the hospital has gone through, as well as videos of former medical staff, nursing school graduates and employees who describe their experiences at Alton Memorial Hospital. The alcove currently depicts “Christmas at Elm Ridge circa 1880”, containing artifacts from the Smith family home. A French Fashion doll which belonged to young Eunice Smith is in the front window and some of the doll’s wardrobe is displayed with her, as well as in frames in the alcove.

Alton Memorial Hospital: 75 Years of Excellence

book

In 2012, Alton Memorial Hospital celebrated 75 years of caring for the community. In recognition of this milestone, local author and historian Charlotte Stetson has written a limited edition book that includes more than 200 photos, many never before published.

For more than 75 years, Alton Memorial has been a health care leader, delivering compassionate care to residents of the River Bend. In this book, we honor the many individuals, past and present, who support our mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve.

The story of Alton Memorial Hospital began with the dream of the Smith family, who donated funds and a portion of their estate to build a community hospital. Sisters Eunice Smith and Ellen Hatch were visionaries with the expectation that the Hospital they founded would be “laid out according to the best modern principles.”

Dedicated staff thrived in an innovative work environment. Pioneers like Dr. Daniel Platt and physical therapists Garth Taylor and Neil Bower were not only on the cutting edge of medicine, they often set the standard that others emulated.
